Why structured video storytelling is good for your remote work environment

People remember stories.

They're not going to remember every detail in your quarterly report, every piece of data you highlight, or every sentence in your email.

On the other hand, it's the stories that resonate with people. It's what they connect to emotionally, what drives them to act, and what they remember.

Plus, people connect with someone much more through video than through an email or text message. In fact, studies show that only 30% of the information transmitted is verbal or written — the rest is understood through facial expressions, body language, and other visual cues.

That's why when you combine the two, it's not hard to see why video storytelling is so powerful, especially when your employees are working remotely. The speaker needs to deliver a message that is concise and compelling, and the audience absorbs it much more effectively. Plus, your employees are more likely to watch your video than to read your email.

While a video is faster and easier to create than an email, it's also more demanding on the sender because it needs to be more concise and engaging in a way that won't annoy its audience. And that is a good thing!

Structured video storytelling is more important than ever

Most of your employees are probably working from home, and it's becoming increasingly clear that this trend is going to continue to grow.

That means fewer face-to-face interactions, casual conversations, team lunches, and company outings where relationships are built. This is especially true for new hires who don't even have the advantage of pre-existing relationships and only know their colleagues through computer screens.

It is therefore more crucial than ever to connect with others in all their human dimensions, including their bodies and voices, in order to maintain a sense of belonging to a true human organization. This will give them three things:

  1. A sense of individual and collective success
  2.
  3. A sense of values
  4.
  5. A sense of clear vision and strategy

A well-constructed and clearly defined video storytelling strategy can make up for the lack of face-to-face interactions. The numbers are clear: organizations that adopt video-based knowledge sharing and employee generated content have higher retention rates and better employee performance.
